PROJECT THREE CASHEWS
An exciting project for the region is the extending of the Cashew Nut Tree planting. Cashews are an evergreen tree, fast growing and ready to crop in three years. The 2021 Project is to prepare and plant FOUR HECTARES of Cashew trees on a new plantation providing employment and a cash crop. The secondary and innovative outcome is the reduction of Co2 to the environment by planting evergreen fast growing trees at a density of 160 per Hectare. The budget for this is £1,000

Friends of Kerr Layen is a small UK charity based in St Neots Cambridgeshire UK supporting Kerr Layen in the Central River Region of The Gambia following Covid-19 and the resulting loss of tourism and a faltering economy.
Agriculture in the region had been poor pre Covid and in February 2021 this small charity was formed to offer support to the village, by providing emergency food aid and planning a path to food stability. The support is on going with DIRECTLY focused shared project work.
Working with Kerr Layen to support the village in developing itself by itself.

Some of our Friends AT Kerr Layen

Water from one of the oldest pumps in The Gambia our priority in 2023 is to renovate this and to put another borehole at the Cashew Trees Plantation.
Mar 2021
The first Friends of Kerr Layen Project was completed. The funding and delivery of 100 25kg sacks of quality rice, 13,000 individual portions, from fund to feeding within 72hrs.
Feb 2021
Following consultation with the village Elders the next 2021 project was to provide a plantation of five hectares of groundnuts for the 2021 harvest, planted during June. It underpinned future agriculture planning and helped sustain the community.
The 2021 harvest was successful and yielded the equivalent of our February emergency aid
2022/23
Our Cashews Planting Project is ongoing, we have planted over 500 tree trees at Kerr Layen on four hectares of fenced land. Keeping the plantation secure and protected from animals. We developed
two further hectares close to the village
fenced and used to bring on Cashew trees for planting out.
Below is Glasgow Grove with our first 500+ trees in the ground, fenced and underplanted with a cash crop.
